Former North Carolina Senator Sam J. Ervin, Jr., has been active in politics since 1923 and played a central role in the Watergate hearings. He has been a stalwart defender of the First Amendment and the separation of church and state. He served in the United States Congress from 1946 until 1974. His appointments included the chairmanship of the Senate Separation of Powers Subcommittee.
