Paul MacCready, the president of Aero- Vironment, Inc., designed and built the Gossamer Condor, winner of the Kremer Prize (which had stood unclaimed for eighteen years) for the first sustained, controlled, human-powered flight. The Condor is now in the Smithsonian, which also holds four more vehicles developed by the MacCready team: a human-powered aircraft, a solar powered aircraft, a flying replica of a giant pterodactyl, and a solarpowered car. He was awarded the Distinguished Humanist Service Award at FREE INQUIRY’S eighth annual conference in San Francisco in July 1989.
