UK Atheist Activist Barbara Smoker Dies, Aged Ninety-Six

Barbara Smoker (1923–2020), one of Britain’s most colorful and prolific voices for atheism and humanism, died in early April. She was the second-longest-serving president of the National Secular Society, an atheist organization; chair of an influential euthanasia society; a vice chair of Humanists UK, the country’s national humanist organization; and the author of a popular children’s book on humanism. Tom Flynn (1955-2021) was editor of Free Inquiry, executive director of the Council for Secular Humanism, director of the Robert Green Ingersoll Birthplace Museum, and editor of The New Encyclopedia of Unbelief (2007).
